Per federal law, any storage of Amonium Nitrate in excess of 400 lbs must be reported to the Dept of Homeland Security, due to the destructive qualities of this substance, and it's use in terror attacks.

Reuters is reporting that West Fertilizer had over 500,000 lbs of this stuff at their West, TX facility, and DID NOT advise the authorities:

Texas fertilizer company didn't heed disclosure rules before blast | Reuters

Screw federal regulators, right? All they'll do is come in here and ask a lot of tough questions, maybe cut into our profit margin...

This is what you get, when you mix Third World capitalism with a First World state: 60 Americans dead or missing, and a small town in ruins

I hope state, local, and federal LE are on top of this one. I anticipate manslaughter charges against those responsible.

I also posted a thread on this when I read it.

Got to love the "self regulate", "self report" rules our government now puts in place.
You think they would have learned by now that self-regulation does not work.

So, you're pro-government regulation? Or, in other words, you want a government official to enforce regulations, in person. I am too BTW. Self regulation means that self will look the other way and have a deaf ear too, IMO.

This episode makes the DHS look like a bunch of kindergarten kids. Of course the place was full of explosives. It is not by a mile the first disaster involving a fertilizer plant. The fact a plant of this type is even allowed anywhere near a residential neighbourhood is stupidity to the max. BAD GUYS COULD EASILY PILFER THOUSANDS OF POUNDS OF THIS STUFF AND THE DHS WOULDN'T HAVE A CLUE UNTIL SOMETHING BIG AND FULL OF PEOPLE BLEW UP.

I'm of the opinion that if the government wants to regulate and oversee something then they better fund it properly to do it.

You don't pass a law to regulate and oversee fertilizer and then wait for companies to appear on your doorstep.

If they pass a law to regulate they must also fund the execution of that regulation.
I had no idea the DHS is regulating like this. Did you ?

And liquid fertilizer is what they took on because of the OK City blasts.

1000 times more than what they said they stored and the DHS didn't even know they existed.
And this applies to every fertilizer company in the US..every one. They have to tell the DHS they need regulation.

FWIW the fertilizer plant was built in 1957 way out in the middle of nowhere so development built around it.
But, given what the plant was only supposed to be holding, it wouldn't have been a danger to the neighborhood. That's why many initial reports didn't know what happened because for that plant and what they were supposed to have it shouldn't have registered 2.4 on the richter scale and be felt 50 miles away.

Since Ted Cruz came running with his hand out for disaster relief - after calling Hurricane Sandy aid "pork"? Even if I'm cool with having my tax dime help people caught in the inevitable consequences o laiisez-faire capitalism, it would be nice if their elected representatives weren't *******s about it.

Okay, then you must be against proposed republican cuts to government regulations.

So, which government agency should have been overseeing this fertilizer plant? Homeland Security, OSHA or other?
IMO, it should have been an OSHA department, after all, OSHA is supposed to enforce workplace safety, correct?

Apparently DHS didn't know this plant existed.

And the same government that people think will protect them from these types of incidents put a school across the street.

Looking out for the kids. lols.
