In China, the law forbids "forcing children under 18 years old to practice religion".
In reality, it strictly applies to Islam only, and children are not allowed in mosques in many parts of China.

I know it is impossible to pass such laws in a religious country like America.
However, it would be nice if parents can wait until their children get older.

Religion is opium to the weak minded. Should you feed your children opium?

No, let them choose.

Children are smart enough to figure out that Santa, the Easter bunny and the tooth fairy are not real, but by the time they grow up religious indoctrination has done its damage.

People shouldn't do it, in my opinion, but we shouldn't tell them how to raise their children.

But according to certain religions, if the children aren't influence to believe in that religion enough, they may be tempted to pick another religion, and suffer for eternity because they made the wrong choice. Parents should have the right to teach a religion to their children so that they feel safe knowing that their children will be rewarded in the after life.

depends on who "we" is! Parents are responsible for assisting to develop moral standards in their children, whether overtly "religious" of not. So parents, the churches they seek to take their children too, yes. . . . public institution NO NO NO! In PUBLIC, all religion should be given the same "respect". or at least all "believers in religion" or those who choose to "not believe" should be given the same respect. . . .that is human decency. No "religion" or lack therof, is responsible for the evils of the world, it is the human mind and ego that bears that responsibility!

Well, any religion should be self evident don't you think?

This isn't about rights' though. I don't think the gov should tell parents how to raise their kids, but I don't think people should force feed a particular religion onto a kid either.

The thing is, people keep using organized religion to convince other people to participate in violent acts. I like to think that if religion was not organized it wouldn't be so easy to convince another person to inflict harm on other people.

If religion wasn't "organized' it wouldn't be religion! That's why Unitarian Universalits are often not considered "religious". . . ..no dogma, no set organization, it is the congregation that determines what is accepted. . . . with the guidance of a (liberal) pastor, of course. . . .

Until they are 18 they belong to the parents, and the parents can teach them whatever they want.
