....in China. Are we glad that we bailed them out?
Yes, we should be "glad." For if the company had failed and ceased to exist ... it would not be able to expand its foreign market production to meet the substantial increase in demand in China where it's plants are operating at full capacity. Building cars in the USA and shipping them to China, solely to satisfy that Chinese market, is an irresponsible business practice. It would price the vehicles so high GM could not be competitive with other manufacturers. And from China GM will export to other Asian countries. Does this cost US jobs? I doubt it. Does it strengthen GM and benefit its shareholders? Yes. Seems to me it's a 'win-win' situation.
Government should NEVER bail out a business. NEVER!!!!!
Agreed. But this is inevitable when the oligarchy allows monopolies to form across every sector.

American made cars are crap, and I'm saying this as a GM employee. But Japanese or Germans cars are not much better. You pay for what you get, rings true no matter what.

Strings should have been placed on the American taxpayer bailout, namely to keep the jobs here. Obama has run his mouth about doing something about the outsourcing, but so far it's just talk (nothing new).
The government forced the Japanese automakers to build cars here, so why not domestic companies?
The reason is that the American CEOs would not be able to pay themselves the outrageous sums they do if they couldn't justify it, and what better way than outsource labor costs to 3rd world countries?

Let me say this. My family worked at GM and Ford and some still do. I used to buy GM cars and trucks and I watched for years as others would buy Toyota and Nissan and go 100000 miles plus with nothing but air filters and oil changes. At the same time I was replacing front wheel bearings, solenoids and other parts.
I bought two Toyota cars and have had no problems what so ever and one has 85k and the other 69k. They have not been back to the shop since purchase 5 years ago. Tires and OC, Air filters are all I have done. I did buy a set of spark plugs for one and do not see a need to change them yet. My last truck I was fixing universal joints, door window regulators, the air was going out, torsion bar rubber bushings and more. My Chevy Aveo was the biggest POS I have ever bought. It had one thing after another go on it. It was a true junk car. I will never go back to American.

Hahaha Aveos are so bad they had to change the name to Sonic. But yes, I've heard your story plenty of times. American trucks seem to hold up much better than cars, but American luxury is extremely shoddy, Cadillac and Buick in particular.
I own a Jeep. I've had my problems with it, but parts are cheap and I don't have the money for an FJ Cruiser. For the life of me I don't understand why, other than financial constraint, lucky personal experience, or sheer blinded patriotism, someone would buy an American car.
Are you suggesting GM should bankrupt itself by paying workers 5 times less in the US?
Or are you suggesting the US makes manufacturing domestically equally attractive by destroying the minimum wage, tax rates, OSHA, and various other regulations?
If it's neither, then what do you suppose we do to bring manufacturing jobs back home? Keep in mind there's virtually zero realistic solutions.
Maybe you should ask BWM and Mercedes. They built plants in the US, didn't get a bail out and still make a profit.
