Canada 'thwarts major terror plot'

Canada's authorities are expected to announce they have foiled a plot to carry out a major terrorist attack, media reports say.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation says the alleged plotters were arrested on Monday morning after being under surveillance from more than a year.

It reports that the arrests took place in Ontario and Quebec.

Police are due to give more details shortly. The plot was not linked to the Boston Marathon bombings, reports say.

The investigation involved a cross-border co-operation involving America's FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, according to the CBC.

The alleged targets were in Toronto and southern Ontario, an unnamed official was quoted as saying by the Toronto Star newspaper.

The police are expected to hold a news conference at 13:30 local time (19:30 GMT).

The Canadian media says the suspects allegedly had links to al-Qaeda.

Canadian police and intelligence services arrested two suspects in Toronto on Monday and thwarted a "major terrorist attack" in Canada, media reported.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police scheduled a 3:30 p.m. ET news conference to provide details, the National Post reported.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp., citing unidentified ":highly place" sources, said the operation was coordinated with the U.S. department of Homeland security and the FBI.

A background briefing, attended by several prominent Muslim community leaders was being held beforehand, the Post reported.

CTV reported that the arrests were part of an investigation by the RCMP and Canadian Security Intelligence Service that had been going on for "a considerable amount of time."

CTV reported that the two suspects were allegedly linked to al-Qaeda.
