They are not anchor babies. Having a baby here doesn't guarantee the parents citizenship, and more often than not, both the child and the parents leave this country.
Correct. The child is a citizen and the parents are not. They can apply through the proper channels and the fact that they have a relative (the child) that is a citizen might be helpful to them in acquiring legal citizenship. If the parents choose to leave or are forced to leave the child naturally goes with them of course..That child can return anytime they want....if illegals care to wait for 18 years that kid can "sponsor them" - poor joke...on my part. If you are here long enough to conceive a child and go through the 9 months of gestation...Then you have had plenty of time to get the legal process going.
I have seem people who allow their visas to expire and then they attempt to file for citizenship..It's a lazy thing or the taking for granted that you don't really need citizenship..Illegals really don't have a problem...apply...get processed and shut up.
People like to throw the term "anchor baby" around and I have a feeling that most have absolutely no idea what the legal "benefits" of having a US-born baby are.
Instead, they cry about "anchor babies" as though having a baby who is born in the US bestows any immediate benefit upon the parent.
What do you think the parents can do once their child is a US citizen?
Do you think it allows them to stay in the US?
Do you think they can apply for permanent residency (a green card)?
Do you think they can apply for US citizenship?
Do you think they are entitled to US benefits?
What immediate benefits do you think an "anchor baby" bestows upon the parents?

If the kid stays here till age 18, and then petitions the parents in, then yes, it DOES pretty much guarantee citizenship.
No, the "kid" has to be 21. After that, he/she can petition for permanent residency of the parents. If that is granted (and they still need to meet all the legal requirements), and if they maintain their status for a number of years, then they can petition for citizenship somewhere down the road.
Also, please tell me what parents have a child in the US and abandon him/her to live in the US for the next 21 years so that they can, perhaps, obtain permanent residency?
I haven't many any yet.
The kid also doesn't have to stay in the US. US citizens are allowed to leave the country...
Exactly. That's some long-term planning in the hopes that regulations don't change in the next twenty years...
