The Dutch town of Drachten, with a population of 50,000, has done away with its traffic lights, stop signs and in places even road markings:

The project is the brainchild of Mr Monderman, and the town has seen some remarkable results. There used to be a road death every three years but there have been none since the traffic light removal started seven years ago.
I grew up in a town of 2500 people and most of the intersections had no stop signs. I don't ever recall a traffic accident at any of those intersections. Now the highways were a whole 'nother story with all the old people who didn't seem to know how to look both ways before driving out in front of semi trucks.
Oh, and then they added a roundabout at one of the highway intersections and people couldn't figure out how to use it. There were tons of accidents from that too, for some reason. I used to listen to the police scanner at work and there were tons of calls about people getting stuck in the roundabout or getting into accidents. Everyone was outraged by the thing...it was pretty comical. I mean, come on people, it's just a roundabout...it's not rocket science.

I find that very scary. I have libertarian views on certain things, but this is not one of those things. Traffic lights, road markings, and stop signs are quite necessary.

I wonder if libertarians will get rid of speedometers and turn signals.
OMG using traffic circles, how revolutionary, why didn't anyone think of this before the 21st century. It isn't as though this has been done for a long time. Washington DC has a bunch of them and the tiny town I used to work in had one. All it is is that you yield until you can get into the circle and then you go. If you just have regular intersections folks will blow through them. Especially if they are on US routes.

One road death every 3 years before the signs were removed. It isnt like this place was "bloody 98" or something like that and then all of a sudden there were 0 accidents. it was already a very driver safe place(atleast death count wise)
