My suspscion is this wasn't the first time. Now Dad has his briefs in a wad because his kid's actions have consequences. Note even irate Dad didn't actually say Brat Boy didn't do it, just that "it's no big deal and it could have long-term consequences that we don't like."

So you have a problem with discipline in school for bad behavior?

I think you have that exactly right--it only matters to the parents now that there are consequences. Dad should have stepped in and told his son to keep his smart mouth shut the first time he got in trouble for being an obnoxious brat.

It isn't a big deal and it should not have long-term consequences.

Are you saying that you can't be a kid without being mean and hurtful?
I beg to differ.

So we have a Republican Governor signing this into law? What will the Republicans think of next?

That is an awesome law.

Look freedom of speech doesn't cover intimidation, threats, etc. You don't have the right to make fun of me or my kids. So the harsher response the better. . .

Too many parents are like the OP, and think bullying is acceptable. At least this brings them along kicking and screaming (out of fear of fines versus anything else).

Read the damned amendment, it restricts GOVERNMENT.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Gawd.

Kids are mean and hurtful. Over a period of years they mature and it gets socialized out of them. The kind of response in the OP is akin to using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut. It is completely over the top for something that really is not a huge deal. And the idea that kids calling other kids names could have long-term consequences is utterly ridiculous.
