It did not live in an age of globalization and in the 19th century it needed to be self sufficient in many ways.
Another rationalization immigration advocates bring, is that some countries in Europe have aging populations and that is why their economies are failing. Again, the US is flooded with young immigrants (most living in large urban centers) and unlike in 19th century, their poverty became permanent and is further propagated to future generations. (Today some 47M people are on food stamps!) Increase these figures and we may get to a point of "non recovery". No long before US will be renamed "New Guatemala".
The clueless just don't get this, those with an agenda (usually an ethnocentric one) or bleeding heart liberals. They are too stupid to know they are creating theirs and their future families demise. What utter fools they are.

No. We just have to do in immigration what we belatedly did in banking. Define and practice standards. People will always immigrate. But that doesn't mean we have to give asylum to criminals fleeing prosecution. Leave that to certain European countries and Caribbean nations.

They will only immigrate if we allow them to. Far too many are sneaking in here illegally though.

Sofia Vergara is an immigrant. Albert Einstein was an immigrant. Yeh, our standards have failed to screen out a lot of sleaze like the anti-Castro thugs in Miami. That merely means we need standards that admit the geniuses and eject the criminals. And until you START practicing those standards, it is futile to judge the situation.

No. The foundation of the United States rests on blood so why stop now?

[let's quit lying to ourselves]

What nation needs immigration to survive? Where did you read this crock of horse****??? In any case, the US absorbed so much immigration in last 50 years, that it is sufficient for the next 200 years!
sums my thought up too
