If the gun was in the trunk, I would have just left school at my regular time and removed it.

I believe the bill said higher education. But the key point is secured. The guns were not secured, nor were they in a trunk. They were on the seats of vehicle. One in the front, right next to were the driver would have been sitting and the other in the back seat.

If he did this after the bill was passed I don't know what his charge would be. It is very stupid to leave a firearm in clear view when you are not capable of accessing it not to mention that his firearm could have potentially been stolen.

Take that stolen gun onto school grounds in CA and it would be a felony, as it is in most states (if not all).

North Carolina's Law.

G.S. 14-269.2

(b) It shall be a Class I felony for any person knowingly to possess or carry, whether openly or concealed, any gun, rifle, pistol, or other firearm of any kind on educational property or to a curricular or extracurricular activity sponsored by a school. Unless the conduct is covered under some other provision of law providing greater punishment, any person who willfully discharges a firearm of any kind on educational property is guilty of a Class F felony. However, this subsection does not apply to a BB gun, stun gun, air rifle, or air pistol.

Amazingly, the Assistant Principal of the same school accidently brought a gun in her car to school that she forgot about too. She was suspended for 3 days, not charged with a felony, and didn't get fired from her job.

What he should have done:

As soon as he saw the gun in his trunk in the school parking lot - got back in his car and driven straight home. Deal with being late for 1st period when you get back to school.

It applies to employees with concealed carry permits at secondary schools it does not apply to students with rifles. It specifies handguns must be locked in a closed compartment

The guns were not in the trunk; one was was right next to the driver's seat with one end of the gun next to the gas pedal.

That pretty much takes the "oops, I forgot!" right off the table, then, doesn't it?
