The assumption here is background checks will stop people from doing something crazy. Sorry, but background checks won't. They won't do anything to stop someone who is crazy enough to kill a bunch of innocent people from carrying out the act. It just doesn't work that way. Background checks seem like the easy solution, but anyone who believes that these things can actually stop the next attack is kidding themselves. Even the sponsors of the failed background check bill of a couple weeks ago admitted that background checks won't prevent the next tragedy.
A background check might stop a guy like that from buying a gun but it won't do anything to stop him from stealing one... then again, he could always attack some kids with a steak knife.

You simply can't argue that background checks wouldn't help in preventing a significant number of needless deaths. Of course it won't stop all crime, but no law does! A piece of legislation is not useless if it helps reduce crime. This is a no-brainer.
This escaped mental patient is obsesses with Sandy Hook. Sandy Hook required guns. If all you gun owners were as responsible as you claim to be, all your guns would be in a locked safe which would make them impossible to steal. The only way this insane man could carry out his murderous fantasy is by buying a gun. Unfortunately, the NRA and "the idiot 10%" have fought to allow this man to do exactly that. Congratulations.

How many kids can an escaped mental patient kill with a steak knife? How many kids can a man kill with an AR-15? We already have real-world examples of this totalling "0" and "26", respectively.
Besides, how can he steal a gun if all you gun nuts are so damn responsible with them? They're locked up, right? RIGHT?
Are you 10%-ers really that inconvenienced by a simple form? It's insane to argue against background checks!

The theory behind no background checks~" criminals and the mentally incompetent do not want to go through background checks, so we shouldn't have them because somebody (presumably someone that could not pass such as criminals and the mentally incompetent) might not be able to buy a gun" Guess this way of thinking just doesn't make sense to me. Those people that cannot pass a background check are the people who should not have access to weapons.
What does this have to do with background checks? The article did not say where he bought the gun. And if you think background checks will make all the guns disappear you are not very bright.

I have no idea, I assure you that one escaped mental patient with a pickup truck could kill a lot more than 26 kids if he tried.

I'm not a "gun nut", I'm a completely legal American gun owner. You'll need to ask someone else that question.

It has nothing to do with convenience, it has everything to do with control. I've already complied and passed numerous federal and state background checks in order to own the guns I legally own right now. I've passed finger print checks and FBI checks to legally carry a concealed handgun in my state.
Most of the people who want "background checks" know that it's a stepping stone on the natural progression of gun control which leads to gun registration, something that I do not in any form support.
Universal background checks cannot work without gun registration and gun registration isn't going to fly with a lot of legal gun owners like myself.

Anyone who is still using the fictitious "90% - 10%" numbers has already proven themselves to be not very bright.
Never been against background checks. In fact they are required for all gun purchases from any licensed gun dealer, whether at a gun show, or at their store.
Thank you for playing.
