Yeah, health checks are SO fun. There's blood being drawn, wearing a paper gown, peeing in a cup - and as your age increases, who knows, a prostate exam or even that laugh-a-minute event called a colonoscopy?
Who (other than you) said anything about health care being fun?
It's impossible to compare the US system to say something like Canada's.
1. The USA has a population that is 10X more than Canada
2. The US's tax system actually favors lower income families and individuals. Many families making less than 30-40K pay much less in terms of "total" taxes than someone in Canada. With Earn Income tax credits, standard deductions, many families pay at a 10% or less rate...that's how we get to the 49% who don't pay federal taxes in the US.
3.Canadian style taxes hurt more lower/middle income US residents than they currently pay. They spend more of their disposable income on taxes. Why do you think many Canadians flock to the US to buy many goods (especially the 70-80% who live within 1-2 hours of the US border).
Nothing is for perfect. There are trade offs with everything in life.
I always like to point out that having universal insurance (that's what Canada's healthcare really is). While that's true, it won't solve problems like Bankruptcy rates. Both Canada and the USA have very similar BK filing rates as a percentage of their total population. So the medical bankruptcy many liberals like to tout as a example for universal coverage falls flat on it's face. People who tend to have pre-exisiting financial problems way in advance of any health problems. Just look at the number of US residents who have pre-exisiting credit card debt in this country. US residents just like to spend more than they make. They consider things like cable TV, smartphones a necessity.
People will also claim not having employers subsidize health care frees up US employers to invest more in personnel. Again, that's not true. Canada imposes a "health tax" on employers. And the taxes go up the more the employers make. So no, employers end up still paying for health care any way you look at it. Many employers in the US have their own health insurance. Like Shands corp that runs many of the U of Florida system. They have "Gator care" which makes it extremely cheap for it's employees. My mother in law pays less than $150 a month for her and her 2 younger kids still in college which very little co pays.
you also can't exclude humans health care just because they don't have the right insurance, or a house to sell to cover ambulance expenses. what a shame..

What about all the minority victims of prosecutors who wrongly convict these people. Why can't those facing serious law charges get the best lawyers? We all know the best lawyers provide the best defense and avoid jail time for the majority of their clients (if clients are truly not guilty). Why not provide the same defendants with the same $500-1000/hr lawyer that CEOs get?

Someone upthread said that "when something is free, demand is sure to rise". I pointed out the absurdity of that statement as regards healthcare, because people generally dislike undergoing even simple medical procedures. It's not as if people get 3-way bypasses to impress the neighbors.
Any fool knows when something is free you get more demand for it. That's why so many Americans go to Canada for health care even though the waiting lines are long. They think it's worth a long wait to get something free.
