No, it is not. I come from the great potato state, and the word only has an 'e' in it when used as a plural, period, no exceptions. Same thing with tomato. The plural is tomatoes, period, no exceptions. Same with tornado. The plural is tornadoes, period, no exceptions.
it is no more acceptable than your is for you're, or there is for their. or looser for loser. Quayle was a loser.
