How is this a good idea. If you are a non-citizen that says it all.

This is for local government only. Nowhere in the Constitution does it say that only US citizens can vote in any election. let them decide how to run their city.

"Citizenship is currently a requirement for voters throughout New York State, but this legislation, “Voting By Non-Citizen Residents,” would change that, allowing immigrants who are “lawfully present in the United States” and have lived in the city for longer than six months to vote."

"New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg opposes the measure. He said through a spokeswoman that “voting is the most important right we are granted as citizens and you should have to go through the process of becoming a citizen and declaring allegiance to this country before being given that right.” The legislation currently has enough support in the city council, however, to override the mayor’s veto."

Actually this makes sense, NYC is considered an international city with people from all over the world living here. A number of people here are legally in the US, but are not citizens, such as people on work visas and student visas. This is basically a way for those people who live and work in NYC to have a voice in what happens in the city.

The second paragraph I posted was for those people who really, really hate Bloomberg and always want to disagree with everything he says and does.

Unfortunately, some people on the right think that automatically means giving illegal Mexicans voting rights in NYC and stepping stone for giving them voting rights for all elections in the entire country

Oh I know, you would think people would be smart enough to know that it isn't just Mexicans that move to this country for various reason.
