Great interview with Grover Norquist on what should be done about our broken immigration system. He actually offers solutions rather than just yell at the problem.

Immigrants need jobs, we need low wage workers
best solution... create a work visa for low wage workers and have them work for cities, counties, states, etc. This would allow the government to lower their spending and our taxes.

They become legal, we get cheap workers, government lower spending, we get lower taxes = win win situation.
Pretty much the same idea as the immigrants that join the military to become citizens.

That's no where near the same idea as joining the military to become a citizen.

Joining the military to become a citizen implies a high-risk MILITARY lifestyle, including the risk of death, and an accompanying extremely strong commitment to the country that transcends personal interest (ie: an immigrant becoming a citizen just for the money). Frankly, you equating a cushy municipal job with military service is extremely insulting to military families, especially those who have lost family members. Stop politicizing military service.

Second, bringing immigrants in to fill low wage government positions (that are never really that low wage when benefits are included) is extremely short sighted. You would first have to offer all of those government jobs to American citizens, who would need to reject them, before immigrant number one could be considered for import to fill a single position. We all know that these government jobs would be quickly filled by Americans. Finally, what happens when that immigrant raises a family? Do you think that their progeny will stay to fill the same low wage position? No. You'll then have to import more immigrants to do the same, leading to an ever continuing cycle of low wage immigration. The only immigration that this country arguably needs is high-skill immigration. PhDs in select disciplines. We have enough poor Americans that need jobs.

Highlights of Norquist's tirade: When he tells us that an ever increasing population is a good thing (when accelerated by low wage immigration, apparently), using conjecture and rhetorical fallacy to link the 'apple computer' with such unskilled immigration. Immigration, Steve Jobs, yeah! He then states a ridiculous lie that immigrants are more inventive than are people who are born here. In pursuing this line of reasoning he infantilizes both himself and his audience. I guess he isn't familiar with the economic situation of 90% of the 1 billion plus Chinese citizens who essentially live in 19th century. My second favorite point of Norquist's is when he stated that he thinks that the Communist China one child rule was some kind of CIA conspiracy. As soon as I read that, I knew that we were reading the thoughts of an ungrounded lunatic with no sense of history. Of course, shifting the blame to America is typical of the left and RINOs, no matter how much of a crazy leap is required to do so. It's ironic that he then has the cojones to slander the rational immigration right as un-American after slandering the American government with his irrational conspiratorial delusions about the one child rule.

Watch Roy Beck's presentation Immigration by the Numbers over at Numbers USA, then we can discuss Grover Norquist. Grover is an exploiter not a solution finder.

If we need low wage earners to work for local governments, there are plenty of folks on unemployment or welfare and plenty on court ordered community service who would love a job. Texas used to hire prisoners to send out the reminders to get your car tags. Some folks objected to car thieves having their vin numbers.
