These are all disasters that can cripple an area and destroy everything in their path. The government uses taxes to pay for things like the USGS, NOAA, NWS, and the NHC, to learn about, monitor, and sometimes predict the disasters. In some cases they warn our citizens to help them protect their lives and property. In other cases they assist with insurance claims.

...Living in the United States, for the most part, is sunshine and rainbows. Occasionally doom strikes and local government asks for money and assistance from the federal government to get help with aftermath.

Should we keep doing that?

Or should these services be cut and leave dealing with disasters up to the private sector and local/state government?

Well sure! I mean, the government has just done splended, efficient work with the tax dollars they already have...right? I put this whole mess with funding of programs on par with a tumor that is found to be cancer. Thats right a tumor.

Blood flowing to normal tissue improves the body and does good. Blood flowing to a tumor feeds the tumor and in time kills the body. We know we have a corrupt inefficient government (a tumor). The question is why some of you want to continue to feed this tumor? Why give more money and power to the goverment(s) we have, knowing who they are?

Alright. While I don't know much assistance related to floods or tornadoes, I will go with what I know.

Here are just *SOME* of the things that government (local, state, federal, military) is involvement.

Satellites used to track storms from the above
Airplane reconnaissance to get detailed information about movement and storm strength
Computer modeling to figure out possible landfall and strength
Warning systems to get people living on the immediate coast to evacuate
Shelters to house people that live in the threat of storm surge
Military to help with the distribution of emergency supplies in areas affected
Law enforcement to defend the property from looters after the storm
Organization of clean up
Building codes to reduce damage and life loss

Getting rid of that is not like quickly ripping off a bandaid.

(And that's not counting the massive knowledge and equipment contributed to the meteorological field through funding)

Yes. I don't know of anyone who wants to see people suffer with no relief if hit by a natural disaster. If we all demand massive scale disaster relief, then we have to pay for it.

Where does the government get the money today? Checked your own pockets lately?

Yes. That's why they sell insurance.

Umm... All-State Insurance Co. doesn't rescue folks off of their roofs during a flood or unbury them from the debris of a tornado... at least my insurance doesn't.

If yours does, let me know what it is. I may change companies.
