Obama agrees to major US force increase in Afghanistan: report - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20090113/wl_sthasia_afp/usafghanistanmilitary_20090113100736 - broken link)
The United States is once again preparing for another war. This time they are building up troop levels in Afghanistan.
In 1979 Russia invaded Afghanistan with a force of 115,000. The war was long and bloody. 15,000 soviets were killed. The afghan force was around 100,000 (however, most of the civilians supported the afghan forces) 15,000 afghan forces were killed a long with 1 million civilians. After 10 years of bloody fighting. The Russian forces retreated.
If obama plans to go to war with Afghanistan the afghan forces will put up a big punch. They will fight as long as necessary. Afghanistan will put up all 32 million civilians if they have to. For the civilians this is a holy war, a war being fought for their god. If they die, they go to heaven because they are martyrs. The casualties will be high for both America and Afghanistan. It will be much more bloodier than Iraq.
Are we not already at war there? Did I somehow miss the end of the conflict in that region? I seem to remember a democratic election some time ago, but we are still there in support of the new government, correct?
This really is a much different situation than Russia's invasion.

Nothing different. Don't think that some democracy is going to do ANYTHING. Afghanistan has been at war for the past 2,000 years. Majors empires have collapsed over the Afghanistan trade routes. Yes there has been periods where a government has reigned over the region but they always rise up and win.
Yes, we are at war with them and they are winning. Sending more troops will do nothing. Afghanistan will just increase their force as well. Not to mention all the other Muslims who will gladly rush in to the fight the holy war. More troops you send in, more body bags coming out. Simple.
There is no government in control of Afghanistan (that actually has any say so to what is going on). Most of the shots are being called by the civilians and the taliban. They run the country directly or indirectly.
I support the CINC in this move. It's just like he said during the campaign, we took our eyes off the ball in Afghanistan and now we're getting it back on track.
I don't believe 911 was an inside job, but I do believe Bin Laden successfully screwed up the US economy in a way that american lives have been changed for the worse. People woud rather die than to lose their jobs, homes and retirement funds and live from paycheck to paycheck with debt up to their ears!
He knew Bush would jump on the chance to go after Hussein. It was a hook, line and sinker effect that the US fell into.
Um, we are not at war with Afghanistan just in case you havent been watching the news for the last 8 years. We are at war with AL Quieda. Last I checked the people of Afghanistan are not at war with anyone.

Exactly. Thank-you. The OP is having a knee-jerk reaction and doesn't really have a clue.
