I believe beer is considered a food in Germany and most of Europe.
A friend (engineer) has beer vending machine at work.
Why not here?
When traveling to corporate facilities in Germany and France I noticed this:
1) In France wine was available, but not that popular
2) In Germany there was beer at my workplace, but not usually available until after working hours (i.e. 5pm we still work/but could have a beer)
This was one company. Its my perspective that European countries do not have a problem with workers drinking beer over lunch. .. i.e. outside the office.
This was a pharma company, and they did NOT allow beer in the manufacturing facility regardless of country.
Why?
US has been a little anti-Europe and puritanical for a long time. Think of prohibition. . and baptist religions versus catholic/etc. Wine and Beer are very much a part of the European experience. I've seen older US companies hating beer. especially if regulated mfg . . .but marketing/technology having beer available. I've seen a lot of companies that may have beer available during the day (think California startup)
I recall reading that in Switzerland, shooting ranges would often have a lttle post with a small platform affixed to it. You were supposed to set your beer stein there, while you took your target practice.
The German culture includes beer. Moreover, German drunk driving laws are very strict. This is why they can have a 16 year old drinking age.
