Before voting, scan through the initial Seat Belt Laws thread to hear the pros and cons for the law. Do you feel that we need laws that mandate we wear seat belts?

I'm asking the mods to let this thread stand as an attempt to gauge the change in public opinion after a lengthy debate.

All of your points were refuted.

People are allowed to ride motorcycles which are much more dangerous than driving without a seat belt.

No they should not.If the government is going to do this "out of safety for the citizens" why not ban alcohol? Ciggs? Hmmmm? Its just a power grab to show the citizen they have no rights anywhere to do as they please when they aren't harming anyone else. Not in our car or in our house.

I voted no. I wear mine, but it's my choice. It shouldn't be a government mandate. Same with helmet laws. Whatever happened to personal responsibility?

I feel that it's my right to shoot my gun....and it's the other person's right to dodge it. So is the same with seat belts.

You could make the same argument about driving a motorcycle. Or smoking cigarettes. Or drinking alcohol.

There's many risks Americans take every day.

And we are only talking about vehicles with this, the percentage of motorcycle drivers is actually low in compared to cars and I so support a mandatory helmet law.

The seat belt law has increased seat belt use, the seat belt has proven to increase safety in vehicles, therefore there is a law for a reason, to increase safety among drivers and people in cars. But you keep thinking it effects some fictional right of yours.

I enjoy riding my motorcycle, but I fear for my life every time I see some idiot talking on his or her cell phone while driving. These morons have almost killed me several times. In one incident, the woman behind the wheel of some SUV missed me by less than 2 feet, but the car behind me broadsided her. I made certain that the police got my information in their report.

I believe also, however, that seat belts and brakes be removed from the vehicles of people who believe they know better how to run my life than I do. I wear my seat belts, obey traffic laws and keep my cell phone off while I am in my car. I have not had a traffic ticket for nearly forty years, and I make certain to vote Republican in every election.
