I was wondering, how do most of you celebrate Memorial Day? Do you have a family party, a cook-out, use the 3 day holiday for a mini vacation or do you take time to explain to your children the true meaning of Memorial Day? Maybe you do both? For those who are involved in organized religion or any religion, do you take time to thank God for sending up all the military people who have given their lives and limbs to keep our country free?
We do combine the day. We have a family get together, complete with the yummy foods we all enjoy as we welcome summer, we say a special prayer for our country, our freedom and remember those who have gone before us, fighting for our rights. And yes, we do discuss with they younger family members why we celebrate Memorial Day. I remember when my dad used to sell lapel poppies and he always wore one as well.
We are a military family, so many members of our family have personally known military service members who have lost their lives in war. We get together to eat, hang out, etc and that's always fun, but we also take the time to remember and discuss the soldiers and airmen that we've known who lost their lives.
We should honor our service men and women always, but I think of Veterans Day as the day we thank all our service people, dead and alive, serving and retired. I think of Memorial Day, as the day we remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for us. Now, let's remember our military and at the same time, enjoy hanging out with friends and family as summer unofficially begins.
