Here are the reasons why eyewitness accounts are not always reliable...

George Zimmerman's self-defense claim could be hurt by his own witnesses, who have changed their accounts since they were interviewed early on in the Trayvon Martin case.
The Orlando Sentinel reported that four witnesses' statements regarding the Feb. 26 shooting changed significantly when they were interviewed a second time in March. The statements are included in the collection of evidence officially released by the State Attorney's Office last week.
ORLANDO, Fla. — Prosecutors in the George Zimmerman second-degree murder case on Wednesday released the names of six “secret” witnesses, all of them neighbors who lived near where Trayvon Martin was shot to death.
The newly disclosed list does not include new witnesses, just several whose identities earlier were kept secret by prosecutors, something both sides agreed would help protect their privacy.
''I can not believe this man Zimmerman can say he was attacked! He had a few little marks on his face, which could have happened very easy, him being fair skinned, and the little small mark on his head is not even worth talking about, it looks worse then it is because the head is very vascular and bleeds easy, even with a small cut, and the area does look small. Does it make it right to kill a person, weather he is black, white, orange or green, when he is not even bothering anyone? If Zimmerman would have followed the police directions, he would not be sitting in a jail cell on second degree murder charges and Martain would be at his home right now and not in his grave. How can anyone feel any compassion for Zimmerman who, I suppose thought he was playing cops and robbers, only thing is, this was not a game.''
The above quote taken from that link is my exact take on Zimmerman. GZ should have obeyed the police dispatcher. ''Don't follow him.''
personally i dont think it hurts him. first of all i believe studies show witness accounts immediately after are the most accurate. anything down the road peoples minds play tricks on them, they read media accounts and their own story gets blurry with those details and after the fact they maybe have been coached or talked to by authorities.
also if these witnesses change their accounts to say negative things about zimmerman his defense cna just say they are not reliable witnesses they change their story.
prosecution has to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, defense just needs to cast doubt and witnesses changing stories casts doubt.
You have to ask yourself the question as to why their statements changed? Was it during interviews with the new prosecutor? If so, did she, or the investigators lead them to making these conclusions and statements? How about the intense media scrutiny on case? Maybe that had something to do with it? Fact is, these statements are pretty much worthless, except the original statements made at the time of the original investigation. It is the ONLY statements which are untainted. Any decent attorney will tear the witnesses apart on the stand as to how, and moreover WHY the statements change.
