There is no question that what happened in Sandy Hook was a horrific tragedy. Through donations $15 million had been raised for Newtown. It was announced that the Department of Education, through a Federal grant under SERV, will now issue a $1.3 million for the city of Newtown, which has a total of 7 public schools.

I get it - lives were lost. What I don't get is why is Newtown receiving the largest grant since SERV was established (see link below)? Although, I tend to think that this was some kind of reward for Newtown residents supporting a certain individual who took the show on the road stomping for gun control, but I could be wrong.

Quote:
Schools in Newtown, Conn., will receive $1.3 million in federal aid to recover after the shootings that left 26 students and educators dead last year.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan planned to announce the School Emergency Response to Violence grant during a visit to the state on Friday.

The grant to Newtown schools was designed to offset costs the district incurred after the December 2012 shooting as well as provide counseling and training for school officials.
Education Department Giving Newtown $1.3 Million Grant

Newton has 7 public schools and several parochial and private schools, which I would think would not be entitled to federal money. Three states, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and one city, New York City, received a combined total of $3 million from SERV as a result of the destruction due to Hurricane Sandy.

Should be interesting to see what SERV allocates to Oklahoma where there was death and destruction.

I've always thought that Government assistance for disasters and other occurrences was disproportionate.
Early estimates of damage to Moore, OK is $2.0B so, we'll see how much of that might be federally allocated.
