In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

John McCrae

And A special mention to all the fine young men who died trying to win the Vietnam War.

This is where my father was laid to rest, Jefferson Barracks National Cemetary, he was a military policeman who guarded Japanese POW's during WWII. My mother was laid to rest with him, always together, for eternity.

We will never forget.

This is my son's platoon leader, 1 LT Colby Umbrell, who was killed by an IED in 2007. My son held him as he drew his last breath (interesting note - my son also is missing several fingerprints because his fingers and hands were burned as he tried to wrestle open the door to the vehicle that was hit, trying to get to his platoon leader).

This is from his gravesite in Arlington, just after the burial:

Rest in peace, LT Umbrell.

Here's the grave of another of my son's friends from that unit - killed within just a few days of LT Umbrell.

Rest in peace, SPEC Bolar.

Lightbulb Lest We Forget...

The nation pauses from the normal Monday hustle and bustle to pay its respects to all those who sacrificed and to all those who served.

Fellow vets: thank you for your service.

thank you for reminding us: I just got back from an early Memorial Day celebration at our daughters. I am so happy to know, our 6 year old great granddaughter knows what today is and why we celebrate the day. Thank you OK schools as well as some others. My guess, some states do not teach this or certainly do not emphasize why today is important. Many think it is just the starting of the grilling season.
