I'm asking this question because I think it is waay past time that we address our marijuana and hard drug laws. It would seem, that our laws would be based upon reason, and our Constitution and not religious dogma and tradition. But for arguably racists and capatalistic reasons, marijuana was outlawed in this country and prohibition has been in full force every since.

My question is this. Are marijuana users criminals in your opinion (outside of current laws)? If not, why are the laws still on the books and what can we do to get them changed?

It doesn't matter what side one takes on the issue of marijuana use, if it is illegal, those who partake in its use where it is proscribed by law have violated those laws and are by definition criminals.

I probably should've re-phrased the question. IYO, as in, not through law, but personal belief, do you believe marijuana users are criminals.

There is a clear change in public opinion towards Marijuana and one which supports decriminalization. This is reflected by the increasing number of States which are legalizing medical Marijuana or even Marijuana itself.

Politicians are not stupid. They want to get re-elected and they can sense the change in public sentiment. But it is up to the public to maintain the pressure through contacts with their elected representatives, through campaigns and through the ballot box.

It is worth remembering that a great many - if not most - politicians in office today have tried Marijuana at some point in their youth (although it is possible they did not inhale ). Any opposition they have is likely to be opportunistic rather than principled. Where it is opportunistic, minds can be changed when the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

Waay past time as if you just came up with the idea. Welcome to the revolution

So would you drink in the 1930's during prohibition? Or would you hold your same stance?

For you drinkers out there, would you still drink alcohol if it was prohibition times?

The term criminal relates to laws of a governing body. Opinion doesn't come into play here. If marijuana use is illegal, than a use of marijuana is a criminal.

I don't think I would like jail so I obey the law.
