The GOP's problem is that any good idea they come up with, they abandon and the Democrats pick it up. Cap and trade was Republican successfully used for acid rain mitigation; Obamacare, a Republican idea successful in Mass.; these are a couple of examples that i can think of off hand.

Are you certain what a socialist is? OK, I accept that socialism means different things in different places. Please explain your definition of socialism and then this is an easy question to answer.

Economic is left-right (pure communism on the far left, pure capitalism on the far right), Social is up-down (authoritarian do-what-I-say up top, do-whatever-you-want on the bottom).
Long, LONG way from a socialist. He's really quite conservative. The problem is the stupidly extreme right-wing blatherings from conservative talk-radio make him appear liberal by comparison, plus they lie.

Back on topic, no truly honest politician can possibly get elected nationally. You MUST be able to 1) convince people from either side of any issue that you are on their side and 2) be able to convince people to like you enough that they work for you.
See, you are in the reality based community where little things like facts and evidence matter but the people idiotically mumbling "Obama is a socialist" are not in the reality based community because facts and evidence do not matter to them.
