If Eric Holder invited the media to a private media. He thought that he could use a spin operation into getting off his back on the phone records scandal by holding an intimate "off the record" meeting at DoJ where he would outline new guidelnes for journalist subpoenas, he misjudged at least two news outlets.
Holder had invited the bureau chiefs of several major MSM media outlets, but the plan blew up in his face when the New York Times and Associated Press flatly refused to participate unless the meeting was on the record.
With the meeting last week at the White House with several friendly columnists and pundits, the administration appears to be in a full court press to swing the media back to cheerleading mode.
I think all of the meetings with government officials, at all levels ... should be "on the record." Oftentimes, though, it's the media which requests the off the record comments for reports they're preparing. I'm not surprised the NYT or AP would decline the invitation. Both have used "off the record" information to publish reports which have either embarassed political administrations from both parties, or damaged national security (in the eyes of the beholders). The laws are clear and everyone should obey them. I've seen nothing to suggest the DOJ has done anything wrong in the AP/Fox case. Time will tell, though.
Screw the media. They have repeatedly demonstrated that they hate everything about the US, particularly the New York Times. No freedom is absolute, including freedom of the press. If they chose to leak classified material, then the government has every right to determine where that leak originated. The media certainly are not leaking that information for the benefit of the American people, but rather for the benefit of our enemies.
What makes the New York Times, or the AP, or any news outlet, any different than what Bradley Manning did? He leaked classified information to WikiLeaks and is facing a Court Martial for that act, and rightly so. Why should the media be an exception?

The media was just fine with whatever the administration did until they found out the administration was spying on them.
It's not that the DOJ got the phone records..it's how they did it and the breath of how many phones they got records on.
Warrants are supposed to be very narrow and specific and it seems in this case it wasn't.
Yeah..let's have a back room meeting off the books to talk about how the DOJ monitors the press.
Our government should not be having any back room meetings that are "off the record".
I hope the press stands their ground here.
That didn't stop Obama and the liberal media during the fiscal cliff. Obama met with a many of the liberal media to push his tax cut message.
Obama met with Arianna Huffington of the Huffington Post and MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, Lawrence O'Donnell, Ed Schultz and Al Sharpton. The meeting was not on the president's public schedule and White House officials initially declined to comment on the meeting.

Well Obama and the liberal media met to push higher taxes. I'm sure they were told about the increase in payroll taxes too and the liberal media was ready to answer to that too. Hey with Chris Matthews getting a $5 million dollar contract why would he care about middle class Americans getting smaller paychecks. He was doing his job and that was to smooth it over. Enjoy a smaller paycheck middle class America as Matthews enjoys a nice hefty bank account.
Holder wants to find solutions to the problem. It has nothing to do with the problem, but find solutions that it doesn't happen again.
I mean, really, what does it matter? It happened. Now let's move forward and find a way to prevent it from happening again.
(end sarcasm)
That seems to be the answer to several questionable activities by this administration. Never address the problem or the people involved, just move forward and find a solution.
