Actually for me, 50+ in the Bay Area with a preexisting condition, the exchange rates are lower than they expected by over $200 a month. And the expected rate was already several hundered lower than COBRA would cost me. Basically, I can get a policy for around $500 instead of $1100.
I understand the rates will go up for some and it IS an "even out" type of thing since there was such disparity with issues like pregnancy (most companies just excluded it) and whatnot that those who didn't seem to need anything paid very little compared to those who may have needed it for something due to their gender, age, health history, etc. I am talking individual insurance here, which is always a surprise to those used to the company plan model. Health insurance IS EXPENSIVE and has been way more expensive than many realize when it's part of their compensation.

Excellent points. Few people have had to buy health insurance on the "open" market and most would be stunned to discover just how expensive those plans are. We've taken for granted, or been simply ignorant of, how much employers have subsidized those costs over the years.
From what I've read, CA is expecting costs to be generally lower than anticipated for the exchanges, and that is a very good thing.
