The main difference between now is that there was an unapologetic dominant culture where one was expected to assimilate into. Still when the numbers became too great the brakes were put into place. We had a 40 year immigration timeout. This allowed for assimilation. No we continue to import millions a year with no regard to skills, cultural competency etc. Anything remotely associated with the culture that built America is denigrated.
Comparing the now to the Ellis Island myth is simply silly.
I agree completely, my post was simply trying to address the person that thinks this current wave of anti-immigration and the resistance to it being simply because of racism.
How funny. To you guys, you say there isn't a single Hispanic run nation that isn't successful. Now somebody actually points out one and now suddenly they aren't Hispanic, they are white.
Can you read? I said "Hispanic is not a race"...and it is not.
Chile is ruled by whites who are Hispanic. Their race is unchanged. Language is not a determinant of race obviously.
He asked for a HISPANIC run country - and THAT'S what a gave him. Whether it's a RACE or not wasn't really the point.
Aside from that, if HISPANIC is "White" then you folks should have no gripe with all those Mexicans being here - they ARE after all, bolstering the White population right?

Exactly! Most Mexicans and especially those jumping our borders are not white per se but Mestizos. They are partially white from their Spanish ancestors and partially native indian usually. Many of them are mixed black or even mostly native indian. Also, they aren't culturally like the anglo-whites in this country so there is no comparison.
A mestizo is of mixed race. In Mexico that means being partially white from their Spanish ancestors and partially native indian. 60% of Mexicans are of that mixed race.
Read a history book sometime. Through out the last 200 yrs every group coming over here has gone thru the barrel. The Chinese, the Italians, the Irish, etc etc. They made jokes about each group coming over and complained "they are letting too many of those damn Micks in."
This is nothing new, just Mexicans and other Hispanics are now the current target.

Here is the difference though. Many of those Mexicans and other Latinos are coming here illegally today and by the millions. For the most part the Irish, Italians, etc. did not. Now do you get why there is an objection and no comparison to the past?
Who wants more English? The point is there should be equal quotas from different countries. The immigration law of 1965 skewed these quotas. The Mexicans in this country should not be assimilated all at once. If 300,000 a year were legally allowed to immigrate, as per the quota, then only 300,000 a year should be legitimized after going through the process. And they should get to the back of the line.
