Ok, Father's Day like Mother's Day comes around every year. What does most everyone do for Mother's Day? It usually revolves around pleasure for Mom right? Sure, maybe a trip to the spa, kids and Dad do the cooking and other such things. The point is that we're recognizing the importance of Moms and their contribution to us all and in whatever way we can, we show appreciation. For sure though, it usually involves relaxation, taking a rest from the toils, whatever they might be.
Great.
What usually happens on Father's Day? Maybe there is some TV or a BBQ involved. The usual? Bombardments from Home Depot, Lowes and other such stores. Why? Of course, let's make sure Dad has the tools and things to work. Forget just sitting around doing nothing, maybe having Mom and the kids do the BBQ while Dad waits with watering mouth for that steak or hamburger. No chance. Home Depot and Lowes have already been programming families to forget anything involving doing nothing, lets make sure Dad is mowing the lawn, painting something, fixing something. We used to give Moms some dumb things like a microwave, new washing machine and other such nonsense. No more, we got that message.
So when does the message go out that there are plenty of days to buy tools, a new lawn mower, some cans of paint and just maybe, maybe, forget about that home depot trip for a day? How about instead Mom and kids wash the truck, polish it up really nice, the works and then cook up Dads favorite BBQ or even something as plain as a P&J sandwich, anything but a home depot gift card or anything remotely resembling anything that came from one of those kinds of stores. Isn't there a lot of other days and holidays we can use for that stuff?
Can't Home Depot and Lowes (Sears too) take a dog gone day off from hustling people to buy some tools to do work? How about no work for just one day, Father's Day. It is Father's Day, not Home Depot or Lowes day, they can have the other 363 days because we don't need to go there on Mother's Day either.
Stay away from Home Depot, Lowes and Sears, just for this one time. It won't hurt the economy, we'll all still buy whatever it was the next day or next weekend.
How about just once, Father's Day being about Fathers? How about not making a Dad an expendable resource for just one day? How about that greatest joy of being a Dad being just that, family around not playing with an iPhone, no Internet, no Home Depot, no reminder of the next project but just about Dad and the family he is part of?
Being a Dad isn't about Home Depot, it is about enjoying family and remembering that Fathers have a place in family, not as someone that just does the heavy lifting but also the gentle caring, the compassion, the advising and the loving of family.
Sorry to pick on you Home Depot but you are part of symbol that is everything wrong with holidays and especially Father's Day in how we see it these days. Close your doors tomorrow, don't worry, I'll buy that new drill on Monday.

But not as many days to get those tools through the door without The Wife™ asking "why did I need a 18 Volt Milwaukee drill instead of the 12 Volt DeWalt that I already have... argh, argh... argh!
YEAH LOWES, HOME DEPOT or anyplace were quality power tools are sold. By the way... get back with a beer and send The Kid(s)™ out to buy the tools, its father's day after all.

As a long time father, i do not want a day at the spa, and rest is boring. I'd much rather have a nice gift card to one of the stores the OP mentioned so I can get whatever fun tools I want but don't really need, and putter around the yard or work on a car if the weather is nice even on Father's Day.
Let dad do what he wants on father day and if that is go get that tool at any of them ;let him do it.He can do that wihile you get the coals going and start the meal.
Most men would love a new tool or a grill. I don't see it as a message to "get to work" In fact a lot of men use tools to do things they enjoy doing, like woodworking. Now I do see mothers day, fathers day, valentines day and sweetest day as fluff holidays created to sell merchandise anyway. Millions are made because folks feel obligated to participate in these holidays or look as if they don't care about their mom, dad, wife etc. Mothers day and valentines day are the worst offenders because those holidays are focused on women, and no man wants to appear not to care about their wife, girlfriend or mother. Every man knows what the consequences of this will be (dire in most cases) so we don't dare miss out on spending the money to participate in these holidays. Corporate America has a real cash cow when it comes to the "hallmark holidays".
Dang... And hubby just mentioned going to lowes Sunday because of the grills being 20% off!!!!
Clearly he has been brainwashed. Take him for a manicure instead.
