Forgive me if this has been covered, but I think I remember seeing this on the news when I was young. Wasn't there a picture, about the time the plane exploded, which appeared to show an exhaust plume resembling what a surface to air missile would look like?

Or am I mistaking this with something else?

Yes, that was it.

Several witnesses on the ground reporting seeing an upward traveling smoke trail or object heading towards the aircraft before the explosion.

This is a photo that a local photographer snapped of PSA Flight 182 as it was going down in 1978. It was on final approach to San Diego airport when it clipped a Cessna being piloted by a flight student. The student had drifted off course while practicing instrument only flying.

Except for the time line. a 15 minute gap. A missile traveling at mach 3.5 travels roughly 44 miles a minute. The max range of the Navy's surface to air missile is 90 miles. It would take slightly more than 2 minutes to cover maximum distance.
Next. Why would the Navy target a civilian airliner for practice.
Next. Missile are not staged on the rails of that era ship. They must be loaded. The Navy doesn't typically load missiles for the fun of it.
Next If a missile accidentally launched the missile has a self destruct mode.
Next The Navy Claims they had no ship in that area.
Next. Do you honestly believe that no sailor would tell a story? Not 1?
Last. The Clinton admin was anything but friendly to the military. If the Military screwed up the Clinton admin would be the first to throw them under the bus.

I was never suggesting the Navy, or even military, for that matter, had anything to do with it. I was just curious about the picture. But I do agree, that there is insufficient evidence available to us to suggest this was anything but what the investigation produced.
