Yeah, pre existing conditions are expensive to treat, the government couldn't even fund it; that's where charity care comes in. Charity care charges you based on what you can afford.

Yes if only the world functioned on "charity care." So if I break my arm without insurance, can I just ask for Charity Care and tell them I will give them $20 for fixing me right up?

What really pisses me off about this whole Obamacare takeover of healthcare is a news article came out recently that younger healthier people who pay for private insurance out of pocket(this is me) will now have to pay more to subsidize those who can't afford health insurance. I can barely pay for health insurance for myself and now I have to pay for others. Why do I have to pay more and take care of others? Where in our constitution is redistribution of wealth written out, word for word. This is socialism and redistribution of wealth at its finest. Just so disgusted with health care takeover.

Charlie.

That depends on your income and whether you actually can't afford to fix your arm. If you have the means and just chose to go without health insurance then no, you will have to pay whatever you can negotiate with the hospital.

Don't act like charity is rare.

Set it yourself! Have some whiskey, bite down on a leather belt and just do it. Take it like a man!

Which is why insurance should not be run by for-profit companies. Also, what do you say we do with those that are a "financial risk?" This would include the elderly and other handicap in our country as well, millions of Americans we are talking about.

It is still an non-uniformed way of practicing medicine in our country, which creates another level of complicated health coverage which could be much more simplified. Also you have an issue with less doctors choosing to honor charity care, as well as for-profit hospitals not mentioning that is an available option, as well as some that choose to actually charge more for a practice rather than less.

If only we could have a simplified sliding scale of healthcare that is easy for everyone to use and based on our yearly income.

Most people don't need charity though. For those that do, all they need to do is ask and apply. Granted not every Dr. will work for free or a discounted fee, but plenty will.

If the monopolistic healthcare system is addressed the cost could come down. The price of everything has come down in price except medical care and education. Housing is technically more expensive because small houses aren't built anymore.

Instead of importing Dr.'s we import gardeners. Instead of negotiating drug prices we subsidize their R&D and let them charge market price. It's probably better to raise the drug prices overseas and lower ours since we are responsible for the R&D. Enforce antitrust laws when hospitals collude on prices. Etc, etc, etc.

There are not enough churches and good hearted people in this country for this whole charity care scheme to work properly. What we need is some organized entity entrusted by the people, for the people, and of the people that could possibly rein in healthcare costs and companies and provide for the common good and the welfare of its citizens. If only there was some entity like that.
