The OP's title reads strangely to me. I keep changing "waiting in line" mentally to "waiting on line".

You north easterners are funny about that, they aren't waiting on a line or at a computer with an internet connection. I actually have never heard someone say waiting on line until I moved to Jersey. It is one of those cultural things that always throws me off. It was like when I first moved to the northwest and I couldn't find the soda aisle to save my life, until I realized it was in the aisle marked "pop."

The Brits can say "on line" as well though I think "on que" is more normal for them. As for differences in descriptions theres Wrecker vs Tow Truck,Buggy vs Shopping Cart, Tin house vs Shed,Metal Paper vs Tin Foil etc.

I cann't understand waiting in line for over 5 hours, for shoes, and then paying $180 for a pair.

I don't understand why people wait on line for hours at the Apple Store for the latest gadget or computer. Or wait on line to get to the first showing of the latest Harry Potter movie / book release, etc.

The "on line" predates the internet. I don't think I heard "in a line" much in the NY area, but it's the most common phrase here. When I was in Canada, I asked for soda and I got a confused look until after a few times the guy at the counter said, "oh! You mean pop."

You would never see me do any of those things either. The last thing I waited in a long line for was the opening of an Uniqlo in Manhattan when I was visiting here, and even then I thought that was a stupid choice for me to do.
