19 years ago the vast majority Haitians weren't immigrants, they were refugees fleeing a serious of coups and counter coups including a U.S. incursion. Many were illiterate and incapable of speaking anything other than Haitian creole. So, my initial shock over the Jeantel's inability to read cursive writing changed when I read that she was born in Haiti.
An immigrant is simply someone that came into this country from somewhere else. One of the pathways for legal immigration is "refugee status" as someone from a "really crappy place". It can be due to religious or racial persecution, poverty, or any other reason our immigration process chooses to define. I'm simply saying that we should be more selective of who we allow into the country. We have plenty of educated people of all races that try to immigrate legally, who have skills that could benefit this country. Yet they are often turned away. And people with no skills and limited intellectual capacity are allowed in, simply as refugees.
From Twitter: At this rate, GZ might just yell out "I did it" just to end this cross. My lord."

He's holding up very well. Not showing a lick of emotion. It would be hard to sit there with no facial expression.
