I actually agree with you--that the people are the church--not the institution. That said, what the "people" believe in Catholicism is often different than what the institution teaches. I absolutely agree with you on the good that the Catholics have done on many social issues. I also know a number of priests and sisters who support gay marriage and a larger role for women in the church. Note that I said "conservative" catholics, and not the entire church. The scripture you're quoting also speaks to all people of faith, and not just institutions. Institutions are created by people, and lots of times they get it wrong.

And the fact that you interpret it that way is one reason that you're a Catholic. Others don't. The great part is that we're all entitled to our own beliefs.
