Oh, and I already pay for schools my non-children don't attend... so what else is new? And if another increase would improve the students' situations, again I'd gladly pay that little bit extra. You have a rather selfish and money-driven view of society/life, don't you?

Why would anyone not care about issues that didn't affect them? Even though they may not personally affect you right now, they may in the future in some way or another. I don't see how it is even possible to not care about one thing that doesn't concern you. It doesn't make sense and frankly is impossible. Now, not being educated or even knowing about all the issues is entirely possible...but one would have to live under a rock for that, especially if they are on this forum I would imagine.

I think it's time for the famous quote...

First they came for the socialists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me,
and there was no one left to speak for me.

This one always gets me! (especially given my Slavic-Jewish background)

you and I have different views on "equality." to me, equality has nothing to do with signing a state contract and getting tax welfare. gay or straight. I have a realistic/honest view on society/life. so you support increases in property taxes? not that surprising considering the gentrification that has gone on in your city. up the property taxes and kick out the poor. no one considers the aspect of government eviction.

OP, I'm guessing you're specifically referring to gay marriage? Well, my two cents are I don't approve of gay marriage (and let me make it clear, I don't approve of gay marriage, that does not mean I hate gays or think they are mental deficient, etc., because I don't), however, I don't think it's going to be the end of the world if we do have it

I prefer this quote on POW survival, and who always dies first.

"Oh, that's easy, the optimists. Oh, they were the ones who said, 'We're going to be out by Christmas.' And Christmas would come, and Christmas would go. Then they'd say, 'We're going to be out by Easter.' And Easter would come, and Easter would go. And then Thanksgiving, and then it would be Christmas again. And they died of a broken heart."

it's very easy actually. you just don't care. when you see these new voting laws being voted on, you think "jim crow." I think, "who in the hell doesn't have a photo ID?" it's just a different way of thinking. one is more emotion driven, and one is more logic driven.

NO, I AM NOT. for the love of god, do NOT turn this into yet another gay marriage thread. jesus. there are already 5000000 of them on this forum. this is all encompassing. feel free to add an issue. I already tackled education, property taxes, voter ID etc.

That wasn't your question, nor is it (I gather) the point of this thread... we have enough debates on that specific issue, so I'll just leave it at "I care about the issue, even though it doesn't personally affect me."

I don't even own a home, and have lived in some of the worst neighborhoods in the Bay Area (East Palo Alto, Hunter's Point, etc). So you're barking up the wrong tree, LOL.

I'll quote my grandmother now: "Well, aren't you just a ray of friggin' sunshine."
