Rez's ain't really "sovereign nations". The Rez's are dying anyway because of meth and booze and because many of the best and brightest Apache, Navajo and so on people want OUT of those places.
That's what's really sad. The reservations are being targetted by the Mexican cartels for their methamphetamine and there is incredible destruction and death going on right now -- and no one cares.
I was up in the reservations of New Mexico last summer and it's tragic what is going on. All the drug rehabs, and you pick up a reservation paper and they tell how many deaths and suicides from meth in just one county. The tribal elders are helpless and sit by and watch is all they can do.
The lands themselves are incredibly beautiful and there are all those glitzy casinos, but how much of their youth can they lose?

With all due respect to your opinion, Rez's ARE actually sovereign nations by treaty passed by congress and signed into law by the executive branch. I know this fact gets up your nose but that's just the way it is.
Your blanket statement that all reservations are infected with meth and booze is patently untrue also. Some are.......most are not. I can not, allow you to characterize the reservation NDN with falsehoods.
You also claim to know that all the "Smart" NDNs are leaving the reservations. This too is a blatent falsehood. Many are getting good educations and returning to the reservations to assist in improving them.
I ask you to PLEASE stop demonizing the native american with your stereotypical falsehoods. It is very demeaning and totally not necessary to the discussion at hand.
I don't do white guilt. We went to a National Park recently, and saw a typical movie, Indians were peaceful people, and we killed the Buffalo, stole their land, blah, blah.
We drive by the rez, see several bars and casinos.

Whatever. End the subsidies.
Maybe we should end the subsidies to Egypt and hostile nations first.
We give so many billions of dollars away to countries that hate us -- the Indians are a part of the USA. At least they should have subsidies if farmers and so many others get them.

This thread is not about subsidies or white guilt. Nobody is asking you to "Do White Guilt". By the same token, as an NDN, I don't do the meth and booze addled reprobate waiting for a handout either. This thread is about a faction in America who want to take away the last possession the Native American has. You take away the reservation you take away the tribal culture, the place where traditions and heritage are passed down from generation to generation. You take away our collective soul.

It's a double-edged sword; many tribal leaders spurn economic development on their lands because they want to keep them pristine, but at the same time that lack of development is what is keeping them impoverished with no options for improvement except to leave.

This is true to a certain extent. Many tribal leaders are reactionary due to past experience. Many "gifts and benefits" bestowed on us by the white man have been a Pandora's Box of sorts and the consequences have far outweighed the benefits.
The modern, educated native american who is dedicated to improving the NDN lot have adopted a Buddhist phrase and outlook.
"Use everything. Be a slave to nothing."
We see a blend of American education, business acumen and tribal traditions as a path to a self sustaining future. The reservations are critical to this mix.
Not necessarily. The Chinese during the Ming Dynasty explored all over the world, carrying out peaceful missions for trade, not conquest. We have no idea what Native people from the Americas would have done if they had the technology. And the tribes aren't all the same, either. Different ones would have behaved differently.
Agree about maybe the Navajos but the Aztecs probably would've been a problem since they like to fight, ask the other Indian tribes in what is now Mexico.
