I came across an anti-gmo petition today. Here is the direct link

World Scientists Statement

Some of the most important (IMO) points listed:

Quote:
*problems have been identified: erratic performance, disease susceptibility, fruit abortion and poor economic returns to farmers.*

*Glufosinate causes birth defects in mammals, and glyphosate is linked to non-Hodgkin lymphoma. GM crops with bt-toxins kill beneficial insects such as bees and lacewings, and pollen from bt-corn is found to be lethal to monarch butterflies as well as swallowtails*

*a batch of tryptophan produced by GM microorganisms was associated with at least 37 deaths and 1500 serious illnesses. Genetically modified Bovine Growth Hormone, injected into cows in order to increase milk yield, not only causes excessive suffering and illnesses for the cows but increases IGF-1 in the milk, which is linked to breast and prostate cancers in humans. It is vital for the public to be protected from all GM products, and not only those containing transgenic DNA or protein. That is because the process of genetic modification itself, at least in the form currently practised, is inherently unsafe.*

*The potential hazards of horizontal transfer of GM genes include the spread of antibiotic resistance genes to pathogens, the generation of new viruses and bacteria that cause disease and mutations due to the random insertion of foreign DNA, some of which may lead to cancer in mammalian cells.*

* Antibiotic resistance marker genes from GM plants have been found to transfer horizontally to soil bacteria and fungi in the laboratory(53). Field monitoring revealed that GM sugar beet DNA persisted in the soil for up to two years after the GM crop was planted. And there is evidence suggesting that parts of the transgenic DNA have transferred horizontally to bacteria in the soil*

What say you, to these claims?

Don't have time to debunk this all piece by piece, but consider the source. You can find a few references on this site to the "aspartame causes all kinds of health problems" that has been debunked a billion times over by real science.

Credibility is not there.

Yeah, buncha science hacks being paid by the anti-science industries.

Praise Monsanta!

The only reason people are against GMOs is because they associate genes and genetic modification with nasty things like cancer. Modifying our own genes is bad, but food can't change our DNA.

It can make members of your microbiome send weird molecular signals to your brain.

Haven't you noticed by your posts?

Pretty much. The whole alternative medicine/holistic health thing survives almost entirely off being anti-science.

Well, there's science, and then there's frankenscience.

Exactly. The amount of twisting and distorting that goes on within the alternative medicine/holistic health community is nauseating. The aspartame thing is a prime example of this. Decades and decades of scientific research has proven it to be completely safe, yet idiots like Mercola keep pushing lies to the uneducated masses.

That was ....AWESOME!

Seriously, if I wanted to eat a potato bug, I'd eat a potato bug. I don't want my corn to have potato bug genes spliced into it, because it makes the corn impervious to round up (roundup-ready). The food might not modify my genes, but it has proven to eat the stomach lining, causes all sorts of internal problems and may be carcinogenic.

I remember when cell phones causing brain tumors was debunked... until the evidence was overwhelming, and the debunkers were just pandering morons. Remember when smoking was considered healthy? Monsanto owns the FDA, so the FDA approves their poison for consumption. Monsanto hasn't done any valid studies, and have never been forced to. They are colluding for profit.

How can anyone defend modifying food when the dangers far outweigh the benefits? Just ask Indian farmers who are committing suicide (15,000 of them) because roundup ready crops have failed and have made their livestock sick.

I'd say it's those who rely solely on that never ending holier than thou because I'm educated attitude who will find out the hard way. Sometimes common sense is replaced with arrogance. That's why you hear so many "informed" people saying "I didn't know" when the sh|t hits the fan. Smart being replaced with stupid in a heartbeat.

What about gene transfer to bacteria? That's pretty serious, don't you think, especially for the part where the bacteria takes the DNA and makes themselves be resistant.
