All banks, postal offices, dmv, government and state institutions should be closed on Saturdays. What happened with weekend off? Yes, I know it is reduced hours, but they should be completely closed. I'm surprised unions did not stop Saturday business. Professional jobs should have weekends OFF. This is the case in most of Europe and other parts of the western world.
By keeping Saturday closed = savings of money & increase quality of life.
Because Americans want to bank and workers want to work on Saturdays
Not true. Many of my relatives work at a bank, and they wish they did not have to work on Saturdays, so is my neighbor who works at the postal office. I mean common who would not want to have a weekend off?
Maybe the fact that the bank is open on WEs expands the operating hours enough to employ your friends and family. I mean lets say they closed the WEs and then canned them because there arent enough hours
banks or privately owned so they can be open anytime they want . most people who can't go to the bank to do their business during the week can make it on Saturdays. I do most of my banking on Saturdays, since I work 8-7 each day.
Post office. that depends on the county or city you're in. Not all post offices are open on weekends. The one near me isn't, so I have to go the next zip code over for one that is.
I haven't seen a govt office open on Saturday since before 2006; which was my local DMV. No other govt office was ever open. Now that govt is scaling back, even the DMV isn't open on Saturdays (and they have furlough days too).
I work for a government institution that's open 7 days/week including nights (public library), and we very rarely work more than 5 days/week each... it's called full staffing, to the point where we can work rotating or alternate schedules. For example, my schedule usually goes like this:
Monday - off
Tuesday - 12:30-8pm
Wednesday - 12:30-8pm
Thursday - 3-9pm or 9am-3/6pm (depending on meetings)
Friday - off one week, 10:30-6:30 following week
Saturday - off one week, 10:30-6:30 following week
Sunday - 12-6pm 2-3x/month
It's a weird schedule, but I don't mind it at all! As a single woman with no children, it really doesn't matter to me if I'm off on a Monday or Sunday, in fact I like getting weekdays off so I can run errands without closures & crowds. The only time it's a problem is when I'm invited to an event on the weekends, but I have plenty of vacation hours that can be used for those.
Did you think everyone at these places worked M-Sa? I doubt it, and if they do it's probably by choice... for example, I volunteer for at least one extra Sunday per month, since my regular schedule doesn't quite give me 40 hours (so that extra day helps financially). My colleagues work different schedules too, sometimes M-F or W-Su, giving us full coverage all week without overworking anyone. Besides, if EVERYONE has the same days off in every field, how would we get anything productive done?

Exactly. Everyone doesn't have time off during the week to run these kinds of errands.
OP........if everything is closed on Saturdays......
.......should employers be required to give their employees time off during the week to do their banking, go to the Post Office or the DMV?
......should employees have to use a vacation day every time they need to go to the bank, the Post Office or the DMV?

Oh, I don't know... maybe because they are in the service industry and customers need
those services on Saturday when they, themselves, are not working.
If your relatives hate it, they can quit their jobs.
They applied for jobs and knew the conditions and hours required, didn't they?
