That is not the reality that's why 3 mayors begged Wal-Mart to come into these areas. One location is in a decrepit shopping center without an anchor for 23 years.

So? I just want to make sure I understand you completely..

You want cities to tell walmart to pay people more so they close their doors and put all those people with jobs, out of a job?

You have the luxury of options others do not.

Why did they not make this wage the minimum for all businesses in DC ?

It was demanded by the UNIONS who have been trying to break into Wal-Mart for years.

And since I don't want to race to the bottom by living on the backs of minimum wage workers with no benefits, or the poorly-paid Chinese workers who create cheap crap for WalMart to sell, I don't shop at WalMart. I pay more for stuff. That's how I believe it should be.

I don't actually expect you to understand, but you asked.
Nonsense you know what passes for grocery stores in these neighborhoods? Poorly stocked mom and pop Korean stores that carry over priced expired items. Some of you literally have no clue how people live beyond your own narrow world and ideology. Yet you claim to be so concerned for the downtrodden.

We should get rid of the min wage. Raising it doesn't reduce poverty or shift the profits to the workers. Raising the min wage does make labor more expensive though and we all know what happens when you raise the price of services/products.

What is the teenage unemployment again?

BTW, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Singapore don't have min wage laws.

Sounds like an inflation circle.
Yes, but it isn't altogether a bad thing either. There is a significant difference between min wage workers in Iowa and Louisiana. In Iowa they tend to be college students, but in Louisiana they tend to be HS dropouts. Min wages are very much a local issue that can only be addressed after taking the local market into account.

If your qualify of life sucks then you should move. We have 50 different states plus a few territories to choose from. I may not like the American culture or the crony capitalism the gov engages in, but the quality of life here is tough to shake a stick at.

Wouldn't be the first time in this thread.

On the other hand I understand DC and wanting to increase min wage. DC just remember if WalMart chooses not to open the stores, it will hurt DC. There are a lot of people who would be able to get jobs if the 3 stores do open. And a lot of people would have a place to shop they could afford. WalMart also often hires employees that otherwise would have trouble getting a job.

Lycos: There is a huge difference between min wage and living wage, they were never meant to be the same thing.. In Fact, in DC no one can live on $12.50 an hour either.
