Voice of America reports that the unused site came to the attention of a congressional oversight committee that reviews projects in Afghanistan.
SIGAR stands for the Office of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, which described the base as a "potentially troubling example of waste." - a British firm was nonetheless hired to build it.
Sopko said that as U.S. forces begin to leave the country, they will be left with two options: destroy the facility or hand it over to Afghan officials.
What could they possibly give us in that we'd actually need or want?
Afghan is rich is minerals..trillions of dollars in mineral resources.

The previously unknown deposits — including huge veins of iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals like lithium — are so big and include so many minerals that are essential to modern industry that Afghanistan could eventually be transformed into one of the most important mining centers in the world, the United States officials believe.

At the same time, American officials fear resource-hungry China will try to dominate the development of Afghanistan’s mineral wealth, which could upset the United States, given its heavy investment in the region. After winning the bid for its Aynak copper mine in Logar Province, China clearly wants more, American officials said.

Rare earth elements is what they have and what we need. Gotta have our smart phones and electric cars and windmills and all that stuff which requires em not to mention the defense department needs plenty. We won't be leaving Afghan ever no matter what dear leader blathers on about. We get the middle east, China will get Africa and Russia will get the "stans" when it all shakes out or there won't be war for oil anymore it will be war for ipod batteries. We picked the wrong place in risk to start out it appears though. lol
Last time I looked we have one mine that produces rare earth elements in the US that was shut down in Cali by the greenies and just reopened here recently. China controls about all of it right now.
JP Morgan is already crawling around there. Anybody think Obama will leave his buddies hanign out to dry with no military paving the way for em to get richer? lol
Untapped mineral reserves in a geographically isolated country half way around the world with an infrastructure strait out of the 16th century largely inhabited by people with a 13th century mindset? Might as well be talking about water rights on the moon.
China shares a border, I can see why they see a glimmer of hope. If they try to bully the locals, however, it will not end any better for them than it did for us, the Russians, the British, or any other number of other outsiders who thought they were going to throw their weight around.

China does not go in with guns. China goes in with money and trade agreements.
China IS in Afghanistan mining.

They've made trade agreements with a central government that is largely disliked in the hinterlands where the minerals are. Its far from inconceivable that they offend the locals.
