Yeah, until "affordable housing" is mentioned and then all bets are off about "who" should live there.
People with money have NIMBY attitudes.

Governments don't hire programmers anymore. They buy off the shelf products and outsource the customizing and running of that software.
It was a joke, Windows 8 is a crappy operating system. Windows 7 was better, but then they went and messed it up with 8.

Here is a link to a real article about this topic that isn't full of propaganda garbage in the OP link.

The only serious flaw I see in this idea is that Microsoft is trying to build it around Windows 8.
The serious flaw I see is Microsoft is even involved...........

The files provided by Edward Snowden illustrate the scale of co-operation between Silicon Valley and the intelligence agencies over the last three years. They also shed new light on the workings of the top-secret Prism program, which was disclosed by the Guardian and the Washington Post last month.
The documents show that:
• Microsoft helped the NSA to circumvent its encryption to address concerns that the agency would be unable to intercept web chats on the new Outlook.com portal;
• The agency already had pre-encryption stage access to email on Outlook.com, including Hotmail;
• The company worked with the FBI this year to allow the NSA easier access via Prism to its cloud storage service SkyDrive, which now has more than 250 million users worldwide;
• Microsoft also worked with the FBI's Data Intercept Unit to "understand" potential issues with a feature in Outlook.com that allows users to create email aliases;
• In July last year, nine months after Microsoft bought Skype, the NSA boasted that a new capability had tripled the amount of Skype video calls being collected through Prism;
• Material collected through Prism is routinely shared with the FBI and CIA, with one NSA document describing the program as a "team sport".

How Microsoft handed the NSA access to encrypted messages

I thought Cons were in favor of people making more money. In a capitalism culture, it is the wealthy that can afford the best of everything, you should know that, it is the conservative motto, let the private sector dictate the market.

It's actually not a joke but real.
Microsoft has a "Smart City" setup for cities all based on Windows 8.

Austin is one of the fastest growing cities in the nation , also one of the cleanest and racially mixed. Austin has the 5th lowest crime rate of any of the top 100 largest cities in the country. Seems like a great place to live.

You might be thinking of Republicans. You have very narrow views of partisan politics.

I'd would rather see local governments employ programmers who use Linux to customize.
Instead they sign contracts with the likes of Microsoft that locks in proprietary hardware and software and generates guaranteed revenue for these big multinationals who then pay programmers in other countries to do the work.
I'd prefer to see tax dollars kept here in the US rather than get sent over to Bangalore/Sichuan.
Linux is open source and plenty of support is behind that.

Actually most of these "smart cities" are liberal.
It's local governments and taxpayer funds that go to affordable housing.
It's only after the vote is taken that private sector gets involved.

Okay, you missed what I was referring to, I was making a joke about Windows 8 because it sucks as an Operating System, thud the only problem with this is that it is run on Windows 8. It is a computer joke because it is true, Windows 8 sucks.

There are always two sides of change..those for and those against.
Those against do have some sound reasons.
And the more that becomes "smart" the less the local residents know about what is going on and have a say as voters.

The too-smart city - Ideas - The Boston Globe
Smart-city projects rely on sophisticated infrastructure that municipal governments aren’t capable of creating themselves, Townsend points out, arguing that the more they rely on software, the more cities are increasingly shunting important civic functions and information into private hands.
