What I was trying to say --- how can so many people "need" food stamps when so many millions of jobs cannot be filled because these people simply will not work them.
We cannot go on putting more and more millions of Americans on government handouts for the rest of their lives because they don't want to work, while we must keep bringing in millions of foreign workers to fill all the jobs.
One out of seven Americans on food stamps is ridiculous. These are mostly able bodied people.
I would love to see a study that indicates that the people getting food stamps are not entitled to them, I don't doubt there is a degree in fraud and abuse but in general they go where the are needed.
So what is your opinion on farm subsidies, should they also be cut. They did not approve a farm bill last year and are operating under a temporary extension that expires September 30, if they don't have an approved bill or extension the farm subsidies will revert back to the policy set in 1930, food stamps will continue as present unless congress changes the program.
The senate version cut $4B over 20 years in food stamps, the last version in the house cut $20B.
Looks like the SOP will be to continuously operate on temporary extensions and budget caps rather than sensible compromise.
Quote:
The House failed to bring up a farm bill last year. As a result, both food
stamps and farm programs are operating under a temporary extension that expires
on Sept. 30. If the House and Senate are unable to reach an agreement by then,
another extension would be required. Otherwise, farm policy would revert to
those first instituted in the 1930s that many lawmakers say are outdated.
Funding for food stamps, on the other hand, would continue at current levels
after Sept. 30, unless Congress were to change them.
The bill that won House approval on Thursday authorizes spending $196 billion
over 10 years—far smaller than the $940 billion cost of the bill before funding
for food stamps was excluded by GOP leaders.
You really do not understand the demographics of those on food stamps. The majority are the working poor, disabled, elderly and children. NOT lazy people who "simply will not work".
72% of food stamp recipients are families with children.
People are having children they cannot afford to raise.
And SNAP isn't even enough so we have the free breakfast/lunch/snack program in schools.

It's not about Food Stamps or the validity of Food Stamps.
It's not about Farmers (and huge corporate farms) or the validity of subsidies.
It's about merging the two issues in "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine" Legislation.
Let them each stand on their own for debate and votes. We have to stop these massive bills that contain everything but the kitchen sink.
Here..put in your zip code and see which neighbor of yours is getting subsidies.
I put mine in and found that the wealthy lawyer who lives in town is getting quite a chunk of money for his "farm".

That is an issue in the farm bill that should be addressed, these large corporations and wealthy owners are reaping the benefits. The bill was originally designed to help out middle class working farmers stay afloat in bad times.

By their nature, I do not believe either can stand alone.
Some of those families include the elderly and the disabled.
