When gas hits $4 I will stop driving,......or siphon the gas out of your tank.

People used to think that about $2.50 gas, and then $3 gas, and so on. But in America, most people have no choice but to drive, so they will pay whatever it takes - and I suspect it will take $4.50 to $6 per gallon not all that long from now. People will pay that, they won't be happy about it, and they might drive a little less - but they'll pay it, because they have to. Spending cuts will be made in other areas, like vacations, restaurants, groceries, theaters, etc.

My advice - get all sorts of vegetable seeds and scatter/plant them wherever you can. Even if you are too lazy to garden, at least a few plants will survive and start producing for you after a while.

i wouldnt refuse to buy it unless i couldnt afford it.

the moment an electric car is available, i will definitely consider investing.

until then, if carpools or zipcar/flexcar is an option, i would exercise it.

There is a definite tipping point when driving to work everyday is taking such a large chuck of money out of your salary, that it just wouldn't be worth it.

Everyone who can, needs to talk to their employer about working from home.

Even if it were $50 a gallon, I'd need to buy some sometime... How can you get along without gas completely? (And I live in an area with public transportation!)

When I left the UK gas there was $7.50 a gallon. Cry me a river.

They also don't drive as much in most European countries due to density and public transportation being great. I'm willing to reckon that we at 2 dollars a gallon pay more than Europeans at 7.50 a gallon.

Edit-I will not stop driving. Do I even have a choice? Work is six miles away for me, of course I could bike but it is dangerous and a hassle, especially during winter and if it rains.

I think at around $100/gallon, it would no longer be cost-effective for me to drive to work, and I'd probably lose money.

At that price point, I would refuse to buy gas.

Yes.
I wish my husband could do this.
I wish more employers would be open to it; I realize it's not feasible for everyone, though.
I will always have to drive or ride a bike, but my job is close by.
It's funny because I remember when everyone was freaking out about the price of gas in the 70's during that oil crisis: what was it, something like 50 cents a gallon?
