As some people here are someone of saying, Hispanic/Latino/a is not a race. Because he is white he is white Hispanic. If he were half black and half Latino he'd be afro-latino.
Obama is half white and half black because both of those are races although most would call him black due to the color of his skin.
Whites, for the most part, seem to be an exclusionary bunch. You cannot be labeled white unless you're full white. If a person is a mixture of white and some other race then other race is usually used as a signifier to distinguish that person as separate from whiteness. A half white half Asian would be seen as Asian. A half white half Latino/a would be seen as Latino/a. And, as is the case with Obama, a half white half black would be considered black.
"Hispanic" ain't a race: some are full "white". Hell; even some "full blood" Asians are pasty white in skin color and if they had a child with light skin anglo white, that child would be called "white".
Not unless he can actually trace his lineage back to a Latin American country or Spain within 1-2 generations. See, this always gets me. I have a friend who abused this in college applications. He is half 3/4 Irish, 1/4 Cuban (his grandfather on his dads side immigrated to the US from Cuba in the early 1900s). For all intents and purposes, he is white. He has light brown hair, green eyes, and pasty white skin. He does not speak Spanish. He does not identify with Cuba in any way, shape or form. Why should he benefit from AA (aff action) in college admissions when his parents always spoke English? He never experienced poverty either, and graduated from one of the most selective prep schools. Checking the Hispanic box would be fraud.
It ain't right but it ain't "fraud" because La Raza tries to claim ANYBODY who's got just a bit of "Hispanic" in their family IF it makes La Raza look good. But La Raza doesn't want to claim someone like Phillip Garrido who raped Jaycee Dugard or Leander Perez, 1 of Bull Connor's pals in the old Jim Crow South.
Might be helpful to get a refresher on the definitions of race, nationality and ethnicity as well. GZ identified himself as Peruvian-American because his racial background is from Peru (on his mothers side) but he was born in the US (which does make him an American). Nowadays, you can still call yourself "__-American" even if you can't trace your roots back to the original Mayflower.
I was speaking strictly of his ancestry on his father's side. His father is Jewish. I am well aware that he identifies with his mother's Hispanic side.
You won't find Hispanic listed under any racial catagories. It is a question about ethnicity.
Hispanic is a racial category for employment applications.
