The 1930s didn't exactly have a strong economy. Also, there were more communists in America than any time before or since, and that was the only decade in American history in which communists actually had some influence.
Capitalism almost failed in the 1930s. That time period was similar to today but on steroids. The economy didn't really improve under FDR yet he remained extremely popular, not too much different from Obama.
