I'm glade to see the birthplace of the Nazis is changing...

Quote:
BERLIN (Reuters) - Ata Ucertas, a doctor from Istanbul with a moustache that curls up his cheeks, was welcomed with open arms when he came to Germany this year, evidence of a shift in German attitudes as its population shrinks and labor becomes scarce.

Helped by a shortage of doctors in Germany, the 25-year-old Ucertas was issued with a visa to come learn German within two months of applying. "The immigration officials were really nice to me," he said.

After decades of tending to depict the millions of residents of Turkish origin in Germany as a drag on society, policymakers are now courting foreigners and learning to be more inclusive.

A fifth of residents and a third of school children have a migrant background, making up a growing share of the electorate.

With elections approaching in September, the changing attitudes are reflected in the rhetoric of Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives.
Germany learning to open arms to immigrants

Most Germans are very welcoming of foreigners. I found out after living here many years that the supposed anti-immigrant sentiment in Germany is highly exaggerated by the media. There is also lots of intermarriage between the Turkish immigrants and native Germans, and their children look, act, and are raised German and are indistinguishable from their native-born countrymen. At least that's the case here in Hesse and the wealthier, more progressive areas of Western Germany. Maybe it's different in the ex-eastern bloc portion of the country, where I rarely venture into. I meet many Germans who mention their dad or one of their grandparents are from Turkey.

Really not all that new. For many years the BMW motorcycles people thought were the product of 'fine German craftsmen' were assembled by a workforce made up largely of Turks and Pakistanis.

Uh; looking at many last NON German names in Germany, it seems IF the legal aliens BECOME "German" in culture, then Germany welcomes them. Those people who try to hold on to their old ways WILL be pushed aside. Same as here in the US.

Germany has always welcomed foreigners into their country....

The difference is, you better have your papers on you while in Germany if the police ask for them....if not....you go to jail....

Makes sense. They should do that here as well. But the only problem with that is the US would need a proof of residency/citizenship standard. Like a federal ID card.

I've only been to Germany once and it seemed ok. I've heard there is a sub-culture that is very conservative pushing for less immigrants, etc. Don't know how large it is though...

Nope, you need a passport to get into Germany, just like here, or a Visa (student) anything else, your illegal.

Hopefully they don't let in many Muslims! The muslim minorities in Europe are already causing a lot of social ills in society that have been building up for decades and show no signs of going away.
