Everything you need to know about ‘stand your ground’ laws

Various liberal groups are launching boycotts and repeal efforts of SYG laws in the wake of the Zimmerman acquittal.

SYG simply states that there is not a duty to flee in the face of a threat. This has long been the case with regard to an intruder in the home; SYG merely extends that principle outside the home. Per the link, the impetus for the law came when a man shot a guy who had broken into his RV. The RV owner faced potential prosecution because the RV was not considered his home under the law; SYG was enacted to fix that. And per the link it passed the FL Senate by 39-0, and was signed into law by Jeb Bush.

In the case of Zimmerman, he was down on the ground being pummeled (according to his account) and didn't have an option to flee even if he had wanted to.

This reminds me very much of the efforts to pass background checks in the wake of Sandy Hook, when the guns used at Sandy hook were duly purchased via background check. It's yet another example of 'this is your brain on liberalism.'

much as i applaud your attempts at educating the unwashed masses who want certain laws changed, they dont really care. they just want the laws changed because it makes it harder to deal with criminals as they should be dealt with.

They will believe their TV. Networks can't even get this right. Stevie should boycott Florida for the 10-20-Life law which is truly affecting people unfairly.

Sorry, but:
  1. Stand your ground was in the jury instructions
  2. Juror B37 has already indicated that the SYG law played a role in their decision to find GZ not guilty.

yes, sadly you're probably right. As Limbaugh says, one of the central truths of our time is that the low information voter is now effectively king.

And those who believe they will always get the truth from only one side of an issue are certainly low information voters.

He's more guilty of parking in a handicapped spot at the clubhouse than he is of SYG.
It just has a cool name and Trayvon is dead so it must be evil.
People are against something they don't even understand what it is.

It's the same reason they voted for Obama.

Matters not, they obviously discussed it if it was in the jury instructions... and for at least one juror, it played a role in her decision to find him not guilty.

You just underestimate the level of mediocrity both McCain and Romney presented.
