Vancouver where there are safe havens to use heroin...it's like the Western Amsterdam.

And last but not least, I'd like to see how NY Times procured their statistics. If it is by rehab/detox admissions, I'd like to see the amount of VOLUNTARY rehab/detox admissions by demographic.

To state the cliche..There are lies, damed lies and then statistics.
Are you really stating that many young white males do not have a problem with heroin and other hard drugs? This is pretty much well known information. Many young white males (especially the upper middle class and affluent ones) begin using drugs in junior high school.

Yes they are... I can give you hundreds of examples of young black artists with a national platfrom to SCREAM from glorifying opiate abuse. PROMOTING IT.

That is the FACE of abuse...

You can deny it until you are blue in the face but show me a white musician/artist that speaks so overtly about heroin use and I guarantee you I can roll off 10 blacks ones to every one you want to name....

Heroin is too expensive for blacks probably.
Meth is more in their budget.

Black youth are arrested for drug crimes at a rate ten times higher than that of whites. But new research shows that young African Americans are actually less likely to use drugs and less likely to develop substance use disorders, compared to whites, Native Americans, Hispanics and people of mixed race.

Race/Ethnicity and Gender Differences in Drug Use and Abuse Among College Students

This study examines race/ethnicity and gender differences in drug use and abuse for substances other than alcohol among undergraduate college students. A probability-based sample of 4,580 undergraduate students at a Midwestern research university completed a cross-sectional Web-based questionnaire that included demographic information and several substance use measures. Male students were generally more likely to report drug use and abuse than female students. Hispanic and White students were more likely to report drug use and abuse than Asian and African American students prior to coming to college and during college. The findings of the present study reveal several important racial/ethnic differences in drug use and abuse that need to be considered when developing collegiate drug prevention and intervention efforts.

Many middle and upper income black parents often think that it's best to place their children in a majority white school, but this may not be a good idea, because black children will be exposed to the same environment as the white children who begin experimenting with drugs at a very early age.

In addition, 652 Hispanic, 634 African-American and 244 Asian undergraduate students were selected using stratified random sampling in order to produce reliable prevalence estimates for these racial/ethnic groups. The entire sample was mailed a $2.00 bill enclosed with a notification letter describing the study and inviting them to self-administer the Student Life Survey (SLS) by clicking on a link to access the Web survey and using a unique password.
Do you understand?? Can you wrap your head around the method and why it is skewed? lol

Illicit drug use was assessed with the following question: “On how many occasions in the past 12 months have you used the following types of drugs?” There were separate questions for each of the following eight drugs: Marijuana or hashish, cocaine, LSD, other psychedelics, crystal methamphetamine, heroin, inhalants, and ecstasy. The response scale for each drug was (1) No occasions, (2) 1–2 occasions, (3) 3–5 occasions, (4) 6–9 occasions, (5) 10–19 occasions, (6) 20–39 occasions, and (7) 40 or more occasions.

Illicit use of prescription drugs was assessed with the following question: “On how many occasions in the past 12 months have you used the following types of drugs? Do not include drugs used under a doctor’s prescription.” There were separate questions for each of the following four drugs: sleeping medication (e.g., Ambien, Halcion, Restoril, temazepam, triazolam), sedative/anxiety medication (e.g., Ativan, Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, diazepam, lorazepam), stimulant medication (e.g., Ritalin, Dexedrine, Adderall, Concerta, methylphenidate) and pain medication (e.g., opioids such as Vicodin, OxyContin, Percocet, Darvocet, morphine, hydrocodone, oxycodone). The response scale for each drug was the same as for illicit drug use.

I think part of the problem is, a lot of people don't wan to discuss the role of childhood physical or sexual abuse and drug addiction. They want to pretend that many of these people just decide one day to use hard drugs, just for experimentation alone.

The majority of hardcore addicts have major self esteem issues and do not feel worthy to even exist. In the CNN comments section, readers were asking, why would Cory Monteith who seemed to have it all, risk everything by using heroin, alcohol and meth. The answer is, he clearly didn't have it all, because he had major mental health issues that are often exhibited by people who experience early childhood trauma/abuse.

More people need to look beyond the surface and understand that drug addiction doesn't just usually "happen."
