I think, this late in her life, the Queen is just trying to undust some skeletons in her ancestors' closet.

I remember reading about some supposed homosexual members of the royal family in past generations - "Eddie", the Duke of Clarence (who was heir to the throne) was supposedly a homosexual and died young in mysterious circumstances. He was succeeded by his younger brother who became George V. He ended up marrying "Eddie's" fiance, too (Queen Mary). He was rumored to be "Jack the Ripper", too, but that's another story. There's a chapter on it in a biography of Queen Mary. The Duke of Kent, too, I believe (George VI's younger brother). He was killed duirng WWII. There could have been many more prior to that.

Rather, I think the Queen recognizes and respects progressive leaders in her nation, as well as conservative leaders, and recognizes that each should be able to live their own lives, within their own skins, their own families, and their own worship, in accordance with their own beliefs and values, rather than being forced to live in accordance with the beliefs and values of someone else (even if that someone else is the Queen).

Seriously? Do you pay attention to the news at all?

I think it's great this was ruled legal over there. Now maybe the religious bigots can step aside & we can actually progress forward as a nation.

Civil unions have been legal there for years...good for them that they've legalized gay marriage.

As a former member of the Royal Merchant Navy of the UK, this news makes me very happy indeed.

British people will get this reference:

At last, they built Jerusalem in England's green and pleasant land.

I just got an email from my wife's uncle in Birmingham, England. Apparently he woke up and his own marriage was tragically unaffected! How could that be? We've been warned repeatedly by conservatives that the entire downfall of civilization is just one gay wedding away!

So did the Queen introduce the bill or does she just sign it?

Bad enough us Americans don't know how our own system works.

Was clever that Her church is not allowed to SSM by law

For the CofE that means female bishops. Meanwhile gay bishops ironically cannot get married in their own church.

Not that I mean to imply there are gay bishops in the UK.
