Hipsters are often looked at as counter productive in today's society and often live in lifestyle that's contradicting to their ideology/world view. Is that how hippies were seen as in the 60s and 70s?

Most hipsters and hippies were counterculture on a superficial level, it's all about fashion and music.

Punks and beatnicks on the other hand I think were more genuine.

Hipsters today are not counter-culture. They are the culture.

Nowhere close. The hippies were much more counter-culture to their straight-laced elders than the hipsters are to their formerly-hippie elders.

Beatniks and then hippies were counter culture. Many hippies later morphed into druggies and some became yuppies. But they started out as counter culture and were opposed to the mainstream and wanted to make the world a better place. Idealists.

Hippies didn't have near the capability to spread their message, as hip hop does.....plus they weren't violent, drugs were shared not pushed. Their music didn't degrade women.......

Yeah some parents didn't like them, my dad use to call them "those damn hippies they're ruining everything."

My turn off was patchouli oil, lack of shaving and bathing!

Hells Angels were on the loose back then also, people got hippies and bikers confused....

A hippie was any dude with long hair and cut off Levis.

I don't think most hippies were political in the 70s.
