I recently saw a list here Safest and Most Dangerous U.S. Cities, 2013 | Infoplease.com that shows Houston as one of the least safe cities with a population over 500k and Austin as one of the safest. This got my curiosity aroused. What is so different about these geographically and culturally close cities to cause such a disparity. How might we relate that to making all of our cities safer? Thoughts?

Austin is where Democrats from places like Houston run to after they destroy cities and communities with their BS policies and they want to escape what they've created.
So, we have another similarity. That only furthers the mystery of why one is top ten safest and the other bottom 10. Clearly political party has little to nothing to do with it.

No. Both cities and thier metro areas have similar political makeups. Again, this appears not to be a partisan issue.
Well this is easy Austin is like 6% Black, Houston is 25% Black. Also unfortunately for Houston they received a lot of Katrina evacuees who brought their ghetto, criminal ways to Houston. Many never went back to New Orleans.
Interesting list though especially the 500k safe list. Only NYC and Charlotte have substantial Black populations. I know how NYC keeps crime down, using common sense to stop and frisk black and brown guys in high crime areas. ID be curious to hear more about Charlotte. Are they doing something similar? Is it just a quirk?

Yes, Houston is filled with the Gimmiedats who have been coddled and taken care of for decades by Democrats, Austin is where Democrats go to get away from those people once they create them. The city of Houston continues to become more and more blue as these people reproduce and immigrate here.
This isn't about race. Any intelligent person knows that blacks, Asians, whites, etc., aren't any more likely to commit crime because of a superficial trait like skin color.
I did just find that the poverty rate in Houston is a lot higher than Austin. That seems to he a recurring theme with crime. This begs the question: does poverty create higher crime or is higher crime adding to the poverty? A vicious self feeding circle maybe?
So how does that answer the question of why one is safe and one not?
One reason, Houston got flooded with Katrina refugees, and is in general a much poorer area, and is pretty well known that more poverty = more crime. Austin is more expensive and does not have nearly the poverty that Houston has. I spent 6 months in Houston about 7 years ago, and was struck in that there seemed to be homeless people everywhere, of all colors and ages, even in the suburban areas.
